Communication problems

One time when I could have communicated better happend last year when I was a senior in high school. It was towards the end of the school year during prom season. There was this boy that I liked for a while but he lived in Cleveland so the only time I could see him was when I hung out with my one friend who lives there. One day we were all hanging out and he asked me to go to his prom with him. I was very excited when he asked me since I liked him so much also I knew it would be alot of fun if I could go. So when I went back home, I started thinking about how I was going to ask my dad if I could go. I waited a couple days before I asked and when I finally did all I said was "hey dad can I go to this guy's prom in Cleveland". I really didn't say too much else excpet that my friend was also going so I wouldn't be by myself that night. He thought about it for a few days then decided that I couldn't go. I was so mad because my friend had alot of fun and I really wanted to go but when I thought about how I asked him I realized that I could have communicated alot better and I might have been aloud to go.
